Josef Perl

Perl was born on 27 April 1930 in Veľky Bockov (now Velykyi Bychkiv) in the Carpathian Mountains, which was then the most easterly part of Czechoslovakia. In 1941 1,708 of the 7,426 people living in Veľky Bockov were Jewish.

Perl’s parents were Frieda and Lazar and he had eight sisters. Perl describes his family as being observant but not fanatically religious, with Perl attending cheder from the age of three.
