Szurek was born in the Polish industrial city of Lodz in 1931. His parents were Zelig and Chana. Nothing is known about Szurek’s childhood or his family.
After the German invasion of Poland, Lodz was renamed Litzmannstadt and the city and surrounding area was incorporated into the Third Reich.
