Risiera San Sabbia - '45 Aid Society

Members of the Boys and their families were held in the Risiera San Sabbia prison.

The prison in Trieste in Italy functioned as a transit camp after the Nazi occupation of Italy in 1943.

The Boys were teenage and child-Holocaust survivors, who were brought to the UK after the war for rest and rehabilitation.

The Risiera di San Sabba was a former industrial rice-processing plant built in 1898. The factory closed in the early 1930s. It was then used as a military barracks before the occupying German forces turned it into a temporary prison camp for captured Italian soldiers.

It was then used as a detention centre for Croatian, Italian and Slovenian partisans and political prisoners, and as a transit and extermination camp for Jews.

The sisters Andra and Liliana Bucci, who would later become part of the Third Group of the Boys, were held in the prison with their family prior to deportation to Auschwitz in 1944.
