Spiro was born in Piotrkow Trybunalski in Poland in 1929. Jews had lived in the city for hundreds of years.
Spiro’s parents were Lisa, a tailor, and Tamn, who had a business selling milk. He had a younger sister Gita and was brought up in a religious household.
His family was very poor and lived in one room in a tenement building. He nevertheless remembers a happy childhood.
